Kevin Begos, a regular CR contributor and CR’s podcast correspondent, has been named the recipient of the first English-language Arab Science Journalism Award. The Arab Science Journalists Association and the Arab Science and Technology Foundation presented the award to Begos on Oct. 25, 2008, at the Arab Science Journalists Conference in Fez, Morocco.
Begos won the award for his article A Universal Struggle. The story, which was featured in CR’s Summer 2008 issue, focuses on cancer survivorship in the Middle East. Begos traveled to the Middle Eastern nation of Jordan to do much of his reporting. “It was very moving to see all the similarities of what cancer patients go through in the United States and in the Middle East,” says Begos. “There are differences in culture and care but ultimately people have the same concerns and needs all over the world.”
Begos is a freelance journalist, podcast host and former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. His work has won national and international awards and has appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, the Tampa Tribune and Scientific American's 60-Second Science. He is based in Florida.
The 2008 Arab Science Journalism Award recognizes the best coverage of Arab science, health, technology or environmental issues between July 2006 and July 2008. In addition to the English-language award, Arabic and French awards were also presented.
