To identify genetic variations common among cancer survivors or their tumors, researchers examine nucleotides: small pieces of chromosomes. Each chromosome resembles a long and tightly coiled ladder of DNA that has supports made of sugar and phosphate groups and has rungs made of nitrogen-containing compounds known as nitrogenous bases.
