Legend of Octopus Woman and Crow
By Chholing P. Taha
In the painting above, Native American artist Chholing P. Taha used acrylic paint to illustrate a narrative story about the importance of lung cancer prevention. Twenty-five crows, surrounding the red octopus, represent 25 long-term smokers. The yellow crow caught in the tentacles of the octopus depicts a smoker who has developed lung cancer. The blue crow that manages to fly away from the sea monster symbolizes a smoker who has quit and escaped death.
