The Color of My Pain
In fall 2007, as part of an art contest in the Middle East, I asked cancer patients to paint their own portraits, showing their feelings about their emotional and physical pain from a cancer diagnosis. This painting is a self-portrait by a 33-year-old woman named Fatemeh, who has breast cancer. She is unmarried and from a very poor region in Iran.
The portrait shows Fatemeh looking into a mirror with her hand covering her breast. The tears in the mirror around her face are hers.
